"29th Colored Trooper"
Dignity
2003

This is a painting of one of the re-enactors portraying a member of the 29th US Colored Troops at the Old Wade House Civil War Weekend in 2003.

This unit was assembled of "freemen" and who had ties to Wisconsin and Illinois during the Civil War. This re-enactor's persona captured the dignity and courage that was a hallmark of all the soldiers of color during the American Civil War, which I have tried to convey in this watercolor painting.
